Alternate careers 


This is the stereotype thinking of people (especially parents) in India. Parents tend to push their children into the abyss of competition without thinking even once from the point of children. They are more bothered about what their neighbor or relative would say if their child does not hold Engineering degree from IIT or NIT or DCE or if their child chooses ARTS after class 10. They are unaware of the interests of their child or should I say, few are least bothered of their children’s interests. There are many courses which are very good to pursue as career but…
Alas! They are not as famous as engineering or MBBS. So people tend to look at these courses with a sight of disgust. But that is not actually true.
Here is the list of few such courses which many wouldn’t have even heard of but they are quite good.
Retail Management Courses -
Retail management course has gottenmuch attention in the past few years. The fuelling factor has been, for sure, the retail boom. The sprouting of chains like Sabka Bazaar, Subhiksha, Reliance Fresh has today led to employment generation at the lower end, but it has also created openings in the management cadre. This has led to a demand for trained MBAs with knowledge in this domain, and management institutes have been quick to fill the gap by starting courses catering to the sector. Here is the list of few institutes providing specialization in Retail Management Cadre:

Institute Name:Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU)Course:Diploma in Retailing
Eligibility: Candidates who have completed +2 shall be directly admitted based on merit. However, number of seats depend upon number of internships to be made available by the collaborating Agencies through Retailers Association of India (RAI).


 Diploma in Agribusiness Management (DABM)
The programme aims at developing agribusiness leaders and entrepreneurs with a global perspective and strong commitment to sustainable growth of agriculture and rural development.
Admission Procedure:Based on written test : Joint Entrance Test – Agri-Business ManagementInstitutes: The three apex level institutions under the Ministry of Agriculture, Govt. of India are:
i) National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management (MANAGE), Hyderabad,
ii) Chaudhary Charan Singh National Institute of Agricultural Marketing (CCS-NIAM), Jaipur and
iii) National Academy of Agricultural Research Management (NAARM), Hyderabad
Course: Post Graduate Diploma Programmes in Agri-Business Management approved by AICTE
Course Duration: Two year

Institute: University of MumbaiCourse::Post Graduate Diploma in Agri- Business Management
Duration:2 Two year Full Time
Admission Procedure: Admission on the basis of a written test followed by an interview
Eligibility: Bachelor’s  Degree  in  Agriculture  or Allied Subjects such as Agricultural Engineering, Food Technology/Science,  Animal Husbandry, Dairy Technology/ Science, Horticulture  Fisheries,  Forestry or Bachelor’s Degree in any faculty from recognized University, with minimum two years experience in the field of Agriculture,  Agro / Food  Processing.


 Geoinformatics
The Two Years Master of Science Degree in Geoinformatics being conducted under distance learning has been designed for preparing a competent cadre of Experts in Geoinformatics and for meeting the demand of the growing needs of trained manpower in the fields of Geographical Information System, Remote Sensing, Physical Geography, Spatial Database Design and Management, Map Digitization, Cartography, Map Analysis, Land Use Planning, Resource Management etc.

Duration: Two years
Eligibility: Graduates of any discipline (Arts / Commerce / Science / Engg. / Medicine / Agriculture / Law etc).
